USE BUOYS TO PREDICT EXACT SWELL ARRIVAL TIME
OF NORTH PACIFIC SWELLS

(For Central & North California ONLY)

These tables help you to establish the swell arrival time on Northern California beaches (relative to San Francisco) providing you know roughly what the swell direction is.   Once the swell begins to hit one of the outer buoys listed below (like 46003), write down the time and period of the first reading.  Then select the appropriate table based on the estimate swell direction, browse over to the period column, select the period of the swell that hit buoy 46003, and browse over to the travel time column that corresponds to that period reading and write that value down.  For exa.cgie, if a 20 second period swell hit 46003 at 10 AM on Monday from 270 degrees, then that swell should hit San Francisco 51.3 hours later, or at 1 PM Wednesday.

* - Distance corrected for swell angle
** - Travel time is based on distance (corrected for swell angle). For exa.cgie: If a 20 second period swell hits 46006 from 270 degrees, it will take 29 hours for that swell to reach Pillar Point.
*** - This figure provides some indication as to how close the buoy is located to that part of the swell which will eventually strike Pillar Point.

APPENDIX A
Swell Profile and Scaling Factors

It is possible to use 'swell measurements' obtained from offshore buoys and convert these measurements to estimate what the swell size will be when it arrives at the San Francisco buoy (46026).

The procedure is:

  • Gather necessary meteorological data to ascertain the swell is in-fact traveling towards your locale
  • Make mult.cgie readings over time at the selected buoy and develop a swell profile (for that buoy). A swell profile is compiled as in the exa.cgie below (identify the buoy number, date and time the swell was observed, and the actual swell height and period for that time).
  • For each reading in the profile, estimate the swell arrival time using tables above.
  • Estimate the ‘arriving size’ for each data point in the swell profile. This is acco.cgiished by a.cgiying the appropriate ‘scaling factor’ (see table below) for the a.cgiicable buoy. Si.cgiy mult.cgie the actual swell reading by the appropriate scaling factor below:
